In New Jersey, public movers and warehousemen fall under the control of the Regulated Business section of the Division of Consumer Affairs under the Attorney General?s Office of Consumer Protection.

You should contact them ASAP to review the details of your situation and ask for their advice. You can also file a complaint using this form. http://elktwp.org/lps/ca/ocp/moverscmplt.pdf

Since your furniture apparently never left the state, none of the normal resources available through the federal government can be used.

IMO, Tipping is really up to you. If you can see that those movers are friendly, careful, responsible, and worth it, you can give them fair tips. They will really really appreciate it.

Like most folks who undertake a personal relocation for the first time, you’re finding out that movin’ ain’t cheap - for people or for pets.

Most of the airlines have their own pet relocation resources but many who?ve used them have complained of the results. You have several good options to consider when selecting a third party company. These have been around for some time and generally have good reputations but can be pricey.

Air Animal Has been in the business the longest.

Canine Carriers - The name’s somewhat misleading but they handle a variety of animals, not just dogs.

Pet Relocation, Inc. - You can reach Pet Relocation at their blog and on Twitter just about anytime to ask a question of just browse their exchanges with their customers. http://petrelocation.blogspot.com/

DON’T USE PRIME VANLINES THEY ARE HOLDING MY PROPERTY HOSTAGE

In August of 2007, my family and I had to sell our home in West Orange, NJ because we could no longer afford our mortgage. We hired Satisfied Moving and Delivery 1-888-379-4496 (PMNJ# 000882, ICC# 423111, PMNJ # 000882) of Fairlawn, NJ to move and store our property. We paid them $2,090.53 for the move and then $280 a month to store our property. They failed to send us invoices for the storage fees for several months but in January of 2008 they contacted us to discuss the outstanding charges for storage. They faxed us invoices both in January and February for a company called H. B. Van lines (PMNJ#000882, ICC# 607177, DOT# 1649408). We have been making regular payments for storage since receiving the invoices to H. B. Van Lines since the early part of this year, even though once again they stopped sending us a bill.

Approximately two weeks ago we received a call from Prime Van Lines of 10 Park Ave, East Orange, NJ 973-672-3950 (License: NJPC ? 000906 License: ICCMC ? 405950 License: USDOT ? 946922). They stated to us that they have been storing our property since August of 2008 and that we owed them over $2,800 in storage fees. They also informed us that our former mover had filed for bankruptcy and that he had intended to abandon our property and that they had graciously agreed to store all property in their warehouse.

We have been told that we were sent letters notifying us of the change in storage facilities and that the monthly storage fee was going to be increased from $280 a month to $750 per month. These letters were allegedly sent to our former address however, as we no longer live there we never received anything. We also received no phone calls regarding the status of our property prior to December even though they had our home number (we kept our old number), my wife’s cell phone and business number as well as my wife’s fax number. Additionally, we are relatively certain that we notified Satisfied Moving and Delivery of our new address when we moved although we have nothing in our possession to prove this.

We have four young children and simply cannot afford the almost $3,000 ransom that is being demanded by Prime Van Lines to remove our property from their warehouse. We have made arrangements to have our property moved but they will not release the property until we pay them the full amount. AVOID BOTH OF THESE COMPANIES

I think I’ve figured out everything on my move (April 2009) except the part about moving the animals. I did so a search on the forum, but haven’t been able to locate the information I need.

I’m going to have my things shipped, but after that I am not sure about the best way to transport my 3 Chihuahuas and 3 medium-sized parrots. I’ve thought of all scenarios and have checked out shipping by plane (extremely expensive for so many animals and can only do 2 per flight) - and having a service ship them for me (again, very expensive).

I live alone and would like to drive across the country by myself and take some time to be a tourist, but with the sheer number of animals I’ll be moving it will be impractical. I drive a New Beetle and it will be very crowded, with no room for luggage or anything else. Also taking crates and cages from the car into a hotel room every night will be difficult because I have a bad shoulder (I won’t even go into what I would do if one of them escaped - can you picture me running down a road, running after one of my critters that escaped?)

I finally decided that renting a van from a company like Hertz is the most reasonable price-wise, and the most practical for me. I would have to have someone (a relative I could fly out maybe) follow me across the country in my car, but there goes my touristy break before I hit my destination. Sad

Has anyone else had this quandary when moving? Any suggestions or comments?

Thanks in advance. Mr. Green

Laser was indeed the most expensive of the companies we reviewed. While they did a good job packing in the US, we also had Euro USA in Germany, and their planning abilities are terrible.

I thought it was just Euro USA, but when we brought our issues up with Laser, they were rude and unsupportive of the customer. I would not recomment LI to anyone doing an international move. EuroUSA did not unpack and were in such a rush and they half-assed the job and left after 2 hours. Poor poor service and it is a reflection of Laser.

Again, customer service with LI is horrible and I would not recommend them to anyone.

Hello,

I’m making a move from San Jose, CA to Marlborough, MA by the end of this January. I’ve read through a lot of the forum posts (and you guys seem to be quite the experts!) and I’ve called the following companies for an estimate:

Thomas Transfer

Moovers Inc.

Ace Relocation

Macy Movers Inc.

Chipman Relocations

This is my first big move, so any advice/suggestion would be much appreciated!

Anyone out there considering using Laser International, I recommend you choose another moving company. The estimate given above of $3300 for a move is a gross understimate. My wife’s 1 bedroom apartment move to Germany cost over $7,000. While they did a good job in Chicago packaging our goods, only two deliverymen in Germany were there to download, and they came at 7 pm, so were unable to complete the services in the contract (ie unpacking, debris removal, reassembly of furniture). Our mattress was soaked because it was only wrapped in brown paper, and there was blook on our couch from one of the movers.

I assisted with unloading - so did 1/3 of the work, to boot. We were insultingly compensated by Laser for the poor display of services of a mere $123 after some coy math that the owner pulled out and never shared with us during the contract write up. His claim, “the unpacking would have taken less than 3 hours.” Well, any sane person knows it takes at least two times that to do it properly.

We were utterly disgusted with the customer service we received; there is not a lot of information listed about Laser, but let me tell you, there should be negative. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY!

Happy New year to all.

I think that while the past year was a challenging one in the moving industry that this year will offer many opportunities for those well positioned for the economic turn.

I believe that the bottom is in for housing and with huge tax cuts and stimulis coming out of Washington along with extremely low mortgage rates will bode well for our industry.

With best regards,

Mark
