Report A Scam :: Can I win a claim for over…

Subject: Can I win a claim for overcharging on packing material?

Last month I had a local move in California. The total distance was around 10 miles. We got a GNTE estimate for labor, and informed the estimator that we would be doing our own packing.

On the day of the move, the movers came and loaded up our furniture, mostly using blankets. However, for a few items (bookcase, television stand, coffee table, end table), they packaged them using plastic wrap, cardboard, and tape. I was in the house the entire time the movers were there, and they did not inform me of any charges related to this packing.

Once we arrived at the destination, before unloading, the movers showed me the bill, which included $600 of packing charges for the “crating” of the above 4 items (the total bill was around $1200). I told him that we had never agreed to that charge, but he required me to pay the full amount to continue unloading. Those charges were out of control – they charged $200 to pack an Ikea bookcase that retails for $120! If I had known of the packing charge, I would have just moved it myself. I paid by credit card intending to dispute it.

Since then I have filed a claim with Anthem Claim Management, where I requested a refund of the $600 in packing charges. They responded and offered $300. Does it sound like I have a case I could take to small claims court to recover the full $600, or should I just take the settlement.

Thanks,

Ed

If I were in charge of GOV DITY moves, I would do a bunch of random reweighs…I betcha more weight bumping goes on in that field than any other.

Military members come in daily to get weights on their POV. For Dity moves, the military will pay the member 95% of what they would pay on a GBL move.

This individual is correct that the military pays only for the weight of the vehicle. They come in to our scale, and we will weigh the vehicle, and they pay for a weight ticket, and then provide that weight ticket to the government for reimbursement.

A lot of military members try to use DITY moves as a way to make a big profit, but it doesn’t always work out that way, especially when using a rental truck. The members forget that any profit they make is taxable, and is usually taxed at anywhere from 25 – 30%, based on what the tax rate is at the time the profit has to be reported. In other cases, the member has found that they actually lost money, because the amount of their expenses exceeded what the government allocation was.

Smart members get estimates for full service moves, and then see the cost comparisons for rental trucks, etc.

A DITY move might seem to be an easy option, but there is a lot of work involved in it, and if for any reason the destination residence is not ready, or there is no residence, storage IS NEVER AUTHORIZED for DITY moves.

Fred’s right. We all have one or two trailers that we keep around for short term storage of local shipments, especially in cases where the shipper might be having carpet replaced, or a new floor installed. Load it on the van and keep it for a few days, and then deliver back out.

Do not fool around with those apartment movers. They are brokers, do not have their own trucks, and what you think is a free move will end up costing you per piece.

I know, because I had to intervene on behalf of a friend to get a job serviced that the crew walked away from because the shipper wouldn’t pay halfway through the job.
