Hello to all. I am moving to Europe soon and would like to explore the option of taking my car with me. This is a permanent move, so it’s a consideration that will factor in fuel efficiency, loss in the U.S. on sale, replacement cost in Europe, etc.
However, before I can even consider the analysis valid, I need to know if I can move the car to the EU. I found the following advice for cases where payments are still being made (Chase has my title).
“All automobiles being exported from the United States must have the proper documentation. You will need to submit the following to your auto shipper:
Three notarized copies of a clear title (front and back) showing you, the customer, as owner.
Or
Three notarized copies of the title (front and back) showing the lien holder and three notarized copies of a letter from the lien holder authorizing the vehicle to be removed from the country.
A vehicle condition report (inventory).
Complete valuation form.
Completed Shipper Letter of Instruction.
Pre-Departure questionnaire.
All documents, except for the titles, will be given to you by your auto transporter. ”
With this advice I called Chase. They asked for the following packet of information after which they would take 7 business days to approve or disapprove my request. My credit score is perfect.
1) Letter of request for the move, signed. - CLEAR
2) Insurance policy in country of destination. - This wasn’t so clear. How can I have one if I am not sure whether the car will be there. I pressed back and asked whether a document showing the insurance company I plan on working with and the policy details (full insurance) will be sufficient. He said yes, but not very convincingly. Does anyone have experience with this?
3) Two personal references. - CLEAR
4) New home address and business address with phone #s. - CLEAR
5) Period of stay. - CLEAR
6) Date of travel (car or myself?) - will provide both
7) “Shipper’s Insurance showing Chase as the lien holder” - this is similar to #2 above. How can I have this if it’s not clear that the car will be shipped. I just requested my first quote from Allied and the agent didn’t quite know what to say to this. He said he would look into it when I asked if some draft form would be possible.
Any help would be appreciated. Since I am moving in the next month or so, I would really need to move this forward now with Chase, before i have any final paperwork with a shipper.
Thank you.
